Sleep for Peace

In 1981 the United Nations unanimously established September 21st as the International Day of Peace.

“Peace Day” gives everyone a specific time to commit to global peace and a chance to contribute to a huge variety of peace initiatives. The theme changes year to year, with the activities focusing on different groups who are suffering due to conflict, discrimination and terror.

In 2013, HI-USA decided to mark the day by organising activities and events for staff and young people who stay in their hostels. They called it Sleep for Peace and its popularity soon saw it become a week long event and a global campaign of Hostelling International.

Sleep for Peace is a time to commit to global peace and a chance to contribute to a huge variety of peace initiatives. Running from 21 – 27 September, Sleep for Peace is a full week devoted to celebrating one of the best parts of hostelling, interacting with new and interesting people!

When young people stay together, they learn from each other, grow to understand the differences between cultures and ultimately become more tolerant and open to people from different backgrounds or life styles.

An Óige has been part of the Sleep for Peace campaign since 2015 and it has grown across our network each year.

We have twice teamed up with the international aid charity GOAL, to help raise funds for those whose lives have been ripped apart by conflict. An Óige hosted a talk from GOAL in our Dublin hostel and collected donations from hostel guests. You can also donate through the GOAL website.

In 2017, as part of the Give Us A Break programme, An Óige sent 75 students from DEIS schools on nights away during Sleep for Peace week. The students had the chance to develop an open minded and humanitarian approach to conflicts around the world, and at home, with the help of Eolas Soiléir and GOAL. They had the following to say.

The 2018 campaign is fast approaching so keep an eye on our Facebook and Twitter accounts, and newsletter for updates! We’ve got something really special planned!
