Attractions: Cultural and Historic
The Ballyhoura area was one of the flashpoints during the birth of the Irish nation in the 20th century. The hills around here were active with rebels and revolutionaries from the Land Movement up until the Civil War. Eamonn Devalera, one of the leaders of the 1916 Rising, was born locally in Bruree.
The nearby Lough Gur Heritage Centre is an interpretive centre that represents every major period of human history in Ireland. In the surrounding landscape there is the largest stone circle in Ireland, bronze age tombs, stone forts, churches and ruined castles. You can follow two free downloadable audio guides which will bring you through different routes in the landscape and find out more in the exhibitions in the centre.
Ask at the reception for some ideas on where to go and what to do during your time in the area or check out our latest blogpost from one of our visitors.
