Killarney International Hostel has been shortlisted in the top 5 as ‘Favourite Irish Hostel’, as voted for by readers of TNT Magazine!
Housed in an 18th century mansion and set on 75 acres of gardens and forest overlooking the mountains surrounding Killarney National Park in Co. Kerry, this hostel is very popular with both Irish and overseas visitors who enjoy the tranquil environment and enjoy socialising with our friendly staff and other guests!
For those who don’t know, Killarney is Ireland’s premiere tourist destination and a great base with access to all of the stunning South West of Ireland. Be warned though – many people have been so inspired and enchanted by the beauty of the scenery and laid-back, cheerful nature of the locals that they end up wanting to move out here for good!
With spectacular views over the mountains and lakes of Killarney, Killarney International Hostel is fully equipped with modern facilities whilst maintaining the charm and character of an historic building in peaceful surroundings. Killarney town itself is a lively hub of activity, with many restaurants, pubs, discos, along with outlets for renting bikes, cars and the famous jaunting cars (horse and cart)! If you prefer to rely on motorised vehicles instead of horses, the hostel is a great base to use to drive the Ring of Kerry, Beara Peninsula and Dingle Peninsula.
We here at Killarney are running our hostel in a sustainable and environmentally friendly way. Most of our waste is recycled or composted. We are continually trying to reduce our carbon footprint and recently became members of Green Hospitality.
Killarney town is in a deep valley in the MacGillicuddy Reeks, beside the Lakes of Killarney and part of the Killarney National Park and is the start and finish of the famous walk – The Kerry Way. Killarney in the “Kingdom of Kerry” is a must-see part of Ireland and Killarney International Hostel is the grandest and best hostel to stay in to see it!

Things to Do
Cultural and Historic
Use your An Óige/Hostelling International Membership card to receive discounts in the following attractions in the area:
Within Killarney National Park is Muckross House – a magnificent Victorian mansion and one of Ireland’s leading stately homes. The elegantly furnished rooms portray the lifestyles of the landed gentry, while downstairs in the basement one can experience the working conditions of the servants employed in the House.
The Gardens at Muckross House are renowned world-wide for their beauty. Muckross House is also home to a number of skilled craft workers who can be viewed using traditional skills in the crafts of weaving, bookbinding and pottery in the adjacent walled garden centre.
This is the ancestral home of Daniel O’Connell – yes, he whom the famous O’Connell Street in Dublin is named after! This lawyer, politician and statesman was known as “The Liberator” or “The Emancipator” and a key figure in Irish history. Situated on 120 hectares of parklands on the scenic Kerry coast, the House displays many relics of O’Connell’s life and career. It’s located 3.5km (approx 2 miles) from Caherdaniel (off N70 – “Ring of Kerry”).
Located on the tip of the Dingle Peninsula, this centre celebrates the story of the Blasket Islanders, the unique literary achievements of the island writers and their native language, culture and tradition.
4. Ross Castle – beautiful castle where you can also take boat trips on the Lakes or walk the Mining Trail dating back 4,000 years
Tours of the Gap of Dunloe are also very popular with visitors to the area. The Gap of Dunloe is a magnificent defile running four miles between the McGillycuddy Reeks and the Purple mountain group. At the entrance to the gap is the famous Kate Kearney’s cottage, named after Kate Kearney, a local legend who (allegedly!) died in childbirth at the age of 102! Travel through the gap either on foot, horseback or in a trap (horse and cart). We recommend Dunloe Gap Tours – Starting at O’Connor’s Pub this tour takes in the magnificent Gap of Dunloe and Lakes of Killarney. Starting in a vintage coach and ending up with a lake boat ride while enchanted by the stories and folklore of the boatmen – this is an adventure tour to be enjoyed by for all ages. Ask in the Hostel about these tours to get the special rate.
You can also opt for the Ring of Kerry Tour Take a scenic bus tour around the famous Ring of Kerry on the Iveragh Peninsula. The bus picks up and drops off right at the Hostel.
An essential part of any visit to Ireland, this tour circles the magnificent Iveragh peninsula – runs through its many passes and valleys along the shore of Dingle Bay and Kenmare Bay.
There is an unspoilt quality to Ireland’s most beautiful region and the Ring of Kerry provides many unforgettable memories as it passes through the many picturesque villages such as Glenbeigh, Waterville and Sneem and returns via Ladies View, the famous Lakes of Killarney and through the Oakwoods of Killarney’s magnificent National Park.
The tour leaves our Hostel 10:30 every day during the season and returns at approximately 17:00 hrs.
Dingle & Slea Head Tours
The Dingle Peninsula has the most rugged Atlantic coastline in Kerry and is scattered with forts and pre-historic huts such as the Gallarus Oratory. Much of Irish heritage is maintained in this Irish (Gaelic) speaking region including traditional music and art forms. Considered by many to have some of Europe’s most spectacular scenery, the peninsula also supports both a rare and unique assortment of flora and fauna.
Slea Head is the most westerly point in Europe and standing there, looking towards America, instills a feeling of excitement and empathy with the millions of emigrants who took this route. There are splendid views around Slea Head, especially of the Blasket Islands.
The bus leaves our hostel at 10:30 every day during the summer season and returns at approximately 17:00 hrs.
Also, if you’re interested in birds of prey – you can now do a “Hawk Walk” – just ask at the hostel for details!
Got a group and want to organise some outdoor adventure activities for everyone? Well, Play-at-Height have another branch in their popular chain of adventure centres at our Killarney Hostel in Kerry and offer the best rates around for group adventure activities!
Hiking/Walking: This is the place to come for some fantastic views and walks! The Kerry Way is one of Ireland’s longest signposted walking trails (200km+ or 124+ miles) and also one of the most popular. The trail starts and finishes in the busy tourist destination of Killarney. It loops around the Iveragh Peninsula and goes anti-clockwise, passing through some of the most isolated and dramatic countryside in the country.
Ask when you’re booking about our FREE guides – An Óige volunteers are sometimes available to lead a small group on a hike but they need to be booked well in advance as they’re very popular!
With our sister hostel Black Valley Hostel situated 15km away in the Black Valley it makes a good alternative start to the Kerry Way walking through the Gap of Dunloe between the two hostels. In addition, walking this stretch avoids repeating the section between Killarney and Galway’s Bridge at the official start and end of the trail.
Hill-walkers staying an extra day in Killarney may wish to climb Carrauntoohil – (1,039m and Ireland’s highest mountain) or Purple Mountain (832m). These mountains do not have sign-posted trails, so good navigational skills are essential to tackle these summits – remember – ask when you’re booking about our free guides – An Óige volunteers are sometimes available to lead a small group on a hike!
