Hike Programme March 2017

Please Note: Preference will be given on the “Special Buses” to members of An Óige on production of their membership card. It is therefore imperative to bring your membership card with you each Sunday. Membership Fees are as follows from January 2017: €25 for over 25 years old and €15 for under 25 year olds family rate is €45. Membership Cards will be posted out. Telephone 01-8826700. Payment by Credit Card and Laser acceptable. Members are advised to check that their An Óige membership card is up to date i.e. cards which show an expiry date of 2016 are not valid and will need to be renewed now.

Please note: From April 3rd 2017, memberships can not be purchased in Dublin International Hostel. Instead, it will be processed by phone (01 830 4555), email (info@anoige.ie) or through our online membership portal

It is imperative that the instructions of the Hike Leaders be adhered to by those participating. The Leader sets the pace of the hike and walkers are expected to obey his/her instructions at all times.  Leaders have the right to refuse to take anyone who does not co-operate with them fully and anyone who they consider would not be able to walk at a reasonable pace especially on the Moderate Hikes.  Walkers who go on Moderate Hikes should be fit and able to keep up with the hike.  A Co-Ordinator has been appointed each Sunday to organise hikers on Eden Quay.

Bring: Rainwear, flask, sandwiches, simple first aid kit, hat, gloves, torch and reflective armbands.

Sunday 5TH March 2017 – Co-Ordinator on Eden Quay: Marie McDonnell.

Moderate Hike: Oldbridge – Kanturk –  Scarr – Wicklow Way – Laragh.

Meet: Laughter Lounge, Eden Quay, O’Connell Bridge end @10am.

Bring: Rainwear, flask, sandwiches, simple first aid kit, hat, gloves, torch and reflective armbands.

Wear: Hiking boots only. Jeans not allowed.

Leader: John Barry.

Transport: Special Bus. Cost €15. No Dogs.

 

Easier Moderate Hike: Kilafean – Trooperstown Wood – Trooperstown Hill – Ballard – Laragh.

Meet: Laughter Lounge, Eden Quay, O’Connell Bridge end @10am.

Bring: Rainwear, flask, sandwiches, simple first aid kit, hat, gloves, torch and reflective armbands.

Wear: Hiking boots only. Jeans not allowed.

Easier Hike: Lehaunstown – Tully Cross and Church – Heronford Lane – Ballycorus Lead Mines – Kathy Gallagher – Rathmichael Woods – Shankill.

Route: Walk along the Grand Canal from Hazelhatch to Sallins (8 miles).

Meet: @11.00am at Heuston Station for Hazelhatch. Train departing @11.20am.

Bring: Rainwear, flask, sandwiches, simple first aid kit, hat & gloves.

Wear: Hiking boots or strong shoes.

Leader: Tom O’Loughlin. No dogs. Leap Card friendly.

 

Saturday 11th March, 2017 – Newcomers Welcome

Route: Inchicore to Clondalkin and Corkagh Park along the Grand Canal.

Meet: Laughter Lounge, Eden Quay, O’Connell Bridge End @ 10.00am.

Wear: Hiking boots or strong shoes.

Sunday19th March 2017 – Co-ordinator on Eden Quay: Marie McDonnell.

Newcomers Hard Hike: Laragh – Wicklow Way – Derrybawn – Mullacor – Drumgoff.

Meet: Burgh Quay @9.45am. 2nd pick-up and drop-off point – Bus stop before roundabout at Loughlinstown.

Bring: Rainwear, flask, sandwiches, simple first aid kit, hat, gloves, torch and reflective armbands.

Wear: Hiking boots or strong shoes. Jeans not allowed.

Ascent: 750 m – Distance: 19 km.

Leader: Tom Hennessy.

Transport: Special bus. Cost €15. No dogs.

 

Moderate Hike: Historic trail through the Dublin mountains visiting on route two Giants’ Graves, site of an 18th century spa and two fine 19th century stone bridges.

Route: Ballyedmonduff – Fairy Castle – Kellys Glen – Tibradden Lane – Larch Hill – Kilmashogue Mountain – Three Rock – Barnacullia – Stepaside. Distance: 12-13km.

Meet: Laughter Lounge, Eden Quay, O’Connell Bridge End @ 10.00am.

Bring: Rainwear, flask, sandwiches, simple first aid kit, hat, gloves, torch and reflective armbands.

Wear: Hiking boots only.  Jeans not allowed.

Easier Moderate Hike: The Wicklow Way from the Pine Forest to Stepaside via Fairy Castle – Two Rock – Three Rock – Barnacullia – Fernhill Tunnel.

Wear:  Hiking boots only. Jeans not allowed.

Moderate Hike: The Oasis – Carrickshock – Mullaghcleevaun – Black Hill – Lacken (EXPERIENCED WALKERS ONLY).

Easier Moderate Hike: Curtlestown to Stepaside via The Wicklow Way – Prince Williams Seat – Boranaraltry Bridge – Two Rock – Fairy Castle.

Celbridge via Celbridge Abbey and part of Arthur’s Way to Castletown.

Meet: @10.15am at the 67 bus stop in Westmoreland St. for bus departing @10.20am.

“The Way to Rome via Tuscany”. An illustrated presentation by Jeremy from Camino Ways.

Venue: Room 102, Dublin International Hostel, 61, Mountjoy Street, Dublin 7.

The launch of National Tree Week at the Botanic Gardens, Glasnevin, Dublin 9.

An afternoon of family fun is planned with a tree talk and walk and tree planting.

 

Monday 6th March 2017 at 2pm

The Annual Tree Week Lecture. “Books, Travel and Lore” by Mr George Cunningham, Director of Crann.

Venue: The Visitor Centre, National Botanic Gardens, Glasnevin, Dublin 9.

Saturday 11th March 2017 – The Abbey Theatre @2PM

“Bally Turk” by Enda Walsh. The lives of two men unravel over the course of 90 minutes.
