Hike Programme July 2017

 

 

Please Note: Preference will be given on the “Special Buses” to members of An Óige on production of their membership card. It is therefore imperative to bring your membership card with you each Sunday. Membership Fees are as follows from January 2017: €25 for over 25 years old and €15 for under 25 year olds family rate is €45. Membership Cards will be posted out. Telephone 01-8826700. Payment by Credit Card and Laser acceptable. Members are advised to check that their An Óige membership card is up to date i.e. cards which show an expiry date of 2016 are not valid and will need to be renewed now.

Please note: From April 3rd 2017, memberships cannot be purchased in Dublin International Hostel. Instead, it will be processed by phone (01 830 4555), email (info@anoige.ie) or through our online membership portal.

 

It is imperative that the instructions of the Hike Leaders be adhered to by those participating. The Leader sets the pace of the hike and walkers are expected to obey his/her instructions at all times.  Leaders have the right to refuse to take anyone who does not co-operate with them fully and anyone who they consider would not be able to walk at a reasonable pace especially on the Moderate Hikes.  Walkers who go on Moderate Hikes should be fit and able to keep up with the hike.  A Co-Ordinator has been appointed each Sunday to organise hikers on Eden Quay.

Newcomers Hard Hike:

Route: Ballinagee Bridge –Glenreemore Brook – Oak Wood – Lough Firrib – Spot Height 702 – Lugduff Ridge – The Spink – Glendalough Visitor Centre

Meet: Burgh Quay at 9.45 am. Second pick – up Tallaght. Return drop off point – Loughlinstown.

Bring: Rainwear, flask, sandwiches, simple first aid kit, hat and gloves.

Wear: Hiking boots or strong shoes.

Leader: Tom Kenny

Transport: Special bus. Cost €15. No dogs.

 

Moderate Hike: Shop River to Kilmacanogue

Route: Knockree – Crone Woods – Glensoulan – Djouce Woods – Ballinteskin – Killough – Glencap Commons and Rocky Valley (long hike 2 drum ups)

Meet: Laughter Lounge, Eden Quay, O’Connell Bridge End at 10.00am.

Bring: Rainwear, flask, sandwiches, simple first aid kit, hat and gloves.

Wear: Hiking boots. Jeans not allowed.

Easier Moderate Hike – The Two Sugarloafs

Meet: Laughter Lounge, Eden Quay, O’Connell Bridge end at 10am.

Transport: Public transport by bus Éireann Bus No. 133 which departs Georges Quay (Adjacent to Tara St. Station) @ 11am.

 

Easier Hike: Lehaunstown to the Scalp

Via Tully Cross and Church – Heronford Lane – Kathy Gallagher – Ballycourus Leadmines

Meet: Laughter Lounge, Eden Quay, O’Connell Bridge end at 10:30am

Bring: Rainwear, flask, sandwiches, simple first aid kit, hat and gloves.

Wear: Hiking boots or strong shoes.

Leader: Joe Moffett.

Transport: Public transport by Luas on outward journey. Return by Dublin Bus. No dogs.

Route: The Devils Glen

Meet: @10:45am. at bus Éireann Bus stop on George Quay (Adjacent to Tara St. Station) for Bus No. 133 departs @ 11am.

Bring: Rainwear, flask, sandwiches, simple first aid kit, hat and gloves.

Wear: Hiking boots or strong shoes.

Leader: Fiona Byrne. No dogs.

 

Saturday 8th July 2017 – Newcomers Welcome

Sightseeing day trip to Belfast to visit the International Rose Garden in Sir Thomas and Lady Dixon Park and various other sights.

Meet: Laughter Lounge, Eden Quay, O’Connell Bridge end at 10am.

Bring: Rainwear, flask, sandwiches, simple first aid kit, hat and gloves.

Wear: Comfortable shoes.

Transport: Private transport. Cost €10 return.

Cost: €40 includes transport by special bus and evening mean in 5 star hotel. Entrance fee into the Boolavogue Centre and Wells Estate. Complimentary tea and coffee at lunch time. Must be paid in full and in advance at time of booking. No refunds.

Second visit to The New Criminal Courts in Parkgate street.

Meet: Laughter Lounge, Eden Quay, O’Connell Bridge End

@ 10:45 a.m. for walk to Parkgate street or @ 12 noon outside the Courts.

A Barrister will talk us through the Irish Legal System @ 1 p.m. We have an optional visit to a courtroom @ 2 p.m. to observe a Court in session. Pre-booking essential as numbers are limited. To book ring Patsy Moloney on (086) 819 4942.

Moderate Hike: The Glen of Imaal to Hollywood via Sugar Loaf – Lobawn- Corriebracks – Church Mountain – St. Kevins Way

Ascent: 600m Distance: 16km.

Thursday 20th July 2017: Dublin Bay Cruise – Dublin – Dunlaoghaire – Howth

(arriving in Howth Harbour at 1.30pm.)

Meet: Tara Street Station at 10.00am. for walk to Sir John Rogerson’s Quay. Check in at boat at 10.45. Boat departs at 11.00am.

Bring: Flask, sandwiches, simple first aid kit, hat & gloves.

Wear: Hiking boots or strong shoes.

Cost: €23 per person

After having your own lunch, walk to Howth Summit or around the Harbour Area.

Leader: Eamon Behan. No dogs.

Moderate Hike: Fernhill Tunnel to Shop river via Fairy Castle – Boranaralry Bridge – Wicklow Way – Ravens Rock Shop River

Distance: 17km Ascent: 640m.

Wednesday 5th July 2017

Daunbenton’s Bat Survey Training Evening in conjunction with Bat Conservation Ireland

Venue: Knockree International Hostel outside Enniskerry, Co. Wicklow

Time: 8.30pm. – 10.30pm.

A one-hour presentation will be followed by a survey of the bats along the Glencree River.

This is a free event open to all.

Guided visit to Lough Boora Nature Amenity Area and Sculpture Park, Co. Offaly

 

Spend time at Lough Boora Nature Amenity Area and Sculpture Park. Opportunities to photograph a very varied collection of modern sculptures set in beautiful nature.

Meet: Heuston Station @9a.m. for train to Tullamore departing @9:25 a.m.

For anyone making other travel arrangements please meet @ Tullamore train station            @ 10:30 a.m. for special bus to take group around Lough Boora Nature Park @ a cost of €15 per person return.
