It has been said that Cape Clear Island, an eight mile cruise off the coast of West Cork, has the best climate in Ireland. What is certainly true is that it is exceptionally beautiful.

The hostel is stunningly situated in the South Harbour of Cape Clear and within a few steps of the pebble beach and the sweeping Atlantic Ocean.

The view from all of the rooms is breathtaking. Awaken in the morning, after a great night’s sleep, to the sound of the lapping waves, with the freshest of air to breathe and, if you are very lucky, your stay might coincide with the annual arrival of that gentle giant, the basking shark, the biggest fish in the sea.

Every year, at varying times, the seas around Cape are visited by Minke Whales, Finback Whales, Humpback Whales, Dolphins, Porpoises, Sun Fish, Seals & Basking Sharks. Scheduled and chartered Whale & Dolphin-watching trips are available for guests too!

Cape Clear Is Ireland’s southernmost inhabited island; it is three miles long by a mile wide (5km x 1.5km).  The South Harbour is the tranquil heart of the island and is an ideal base for those hankering after nature in the raw, but if you prefer a bit of hustle & bustle then the first of three pubs is just a five minutes walk away. A little further on and you arrive in the North Harbour, the lively centre of Cape, with its local shop, café, restaurant, tourist information centre, pubs, and sandy beach at low tide.

If you are looking for a wonderful and truly unique Irish experience, make sure to pay Cape Clear Holiday Hostel a visit.

The ferry trip to Cape from Baltimore, or Schull during the summer, is regarded by many as a mini cruise with a chance of seeing Seals, and sometimes Whales and Dolphins. The ferry crew always keeps a sharp lookout for Whales and Dolphins and will often make a small detour if any are spotted.

Cape Clear seems to have its own climate and when the weather is not so good on the mainland it is often lovely on Cape.  So if it is raining in Cork city, make a dash for the Cape Clear Hostel and you might just find the weather a little better there!

Cape Clear is a truly Irish island and is immersed in the Irish Language and culture. It is the places to come to if you want to learn or practice the Irish language, which is spoken by most of the islanders.

ATTRACTIONS – cultural and historic

Cape Clear is rich in archaeology with some amazing stone walls, Ancients Standing Stones, Dun an Oir (The Castle of Gold), the historic Cape Lighthouse and the Napoleonic Signal Tower.  Scheduled tours of the island are available each afternoon during the summer.

Cape Clear Museum houses interpretative exhibition panels covering island settlement patterns, folk and farm, genealogy, folklore, place names, education, famine, telegraphy, and maritime history. Events of note in the history of the island are also remembered with special anniversary commemorations, exhibitions and lectures. The Museum and Heritage Centre is open daily, June to September and thereafter by arrangement locally with Richie.

Cape Clear Hostel is based in a building dating from the 17th Century, with major changes and additions during the 20th century.  In the 19th century it was a coast guard station and, later, it became the residence of the Rev Edward Spring while he struggled to establish a congregation on the island.

In 1959 the house became the first bird observatory in Ireland and, since then, Cape has been internationally renowned as a Bird-Watching centre, with rarities being spotted every year.  Sinead is proud to have been the first person to spot a Lesser Grey Shrike, a true rarity, in the hostel gardens.  We were also delighted that Hoopoes are regular visitors to Cape.

ACTIVITIES

Water Sports/Fishing/Boating: The south harbour is a great place for Swimming and the island is also a centre for Water sports including Snorkelling, Kayaking, and Fishing and, if you are into boats, the annual Cape Clear Regatta in August is designed just for you, with hundreds of yachts and other boats of varying shapes and sizes filling the harbours.

Fishing from the pier or rocks, within sight and sound of the hostel, for mackerel in season and for pollock anytime, is a great way to spend a few relaxing hours.

Fishing rods are freely available for guests to use and adults & children alike are welcome to go fishing with your host, An Richie (free of charge!), who is happy to show novice anglers how to fish and how to fillet the fish they catch. A photograph of the young angler with their first fish is a great memento.

Non-fishing guests are regularly treated to a fresh mackerel, in season, caught by your Handsome Host and, if you are lucky and arrive at the right time, you might see the amazing phenomenon of the 'run' of the mackerel, when large parts of the harbour appear to be boiling with feeding fish! This is when sand-eels arrive in the harbour, being frantically chased by shoals of mackerel from below, with flocks of gulls swooping from above and gannets diving from enormous heights. A sight you will not forget in a hurry!

Other activities: Guests are welcome to use the hostel throughout the day and if the weather is not the best then you might relax with a game of Chess or get the heart racing with a game of Table-tennis.

Nightlife and Eating out: The island has three pubs and two restaurants and many of the old Irish ways are still alive here with regular traditional music sessions at the weekends and sometimes during the week too.  A recent revival of the ‘Wren Boys’ is a magical experience, and the Storytelling Festival, in September each year, is eagerly attended by guests from around the world.

Club Cléire

Club Cleire is a social club in the picturesque North Harbour.  An Club was founded by the Community Cooperative in the 1970's and since then has been at the centre of the social life of this small Island community. An Club promotes traditional and other forms of music, Irish language, culture and art, and provides facilities to a variety of local groups which promote the common good.

Traditional music sessions take place every weekend in June, July, August and early September, and at various other times throughout the year. Visiting musicians, singers, dancers, poets and storytellers of all kinds are always more than welcome to join in. Many a wonderful night has been passed in Club Cléire when local musicians have been joined by rock, country & western, blues, jazz musicians, often mad drummers as well as singers in any language from Irish to Swahili!

April

Centenary Anniversary Celebrations of Titanic on April 12th 2012

Cape Clear Island to take part in Centenary Anniversary Celebrations of Titanic

Next April 12th 2012 is the 100th year anniversary of the Titanic's doomed maiden voyage from Cobh and it will be celebrated with a series of events along the West Cork coast from Kinsale to Beara.

It all starts at 2.30pm, the time the Titanic departed Cobh on her fateful trip.

Cape Clear Island has agreed to take part, together with the other coastal communities and, appropriately, given the spirit and traditions of the Island, this will take the form of a fire beacon to be lighted on the cliffs close to the Old Cape Clear Lighthouse and Napoleonic Watchtower and Signal Station.

The Titanic passed Cape Clear Island and the Fastnet Lighthouse on its fateful journey.

The Fastnet Rock is also known as 'Ireland's Teardrop' as it was the last part of Ireland seen by many emigrants sailing to the New World.

Cape Clear Island was the last inhabited part of Ireland seen from the ships carrying the emigrants.

Many Capers were emigrants themselves and made the harrowing journey. It is said that the last tearful sight of Ireland they got was the burning beacons lit by the hands of family and friends at the precise time the ship was due to pass Cape Clear.

More information at the Beara Tourism website.

Easter Weekend

Traditional Music session on Good Friday, Saturday and Easter Sunday.

Cape Clear Annual Easter Egg Hunt Quiz – More than a quiz and much more than a hunt (Easter Sunday).

Each year teams of people, consisting of islanders and visitors & adults and children, are formed to compete for the Cape Clear Golden Egg.

The event is a moveable feast, one year in the North Harbour and the next in the South Harbour.  It all starts with a quiz with almost impossible questions, and then moves on to the hunt proper.

The teams are given the first clue and must decode it to find the next, and the next, and the next……. until they discover the Golden Egg.

Sounds easy enough and you can take part regardless of the level of personal fitness or general knowledge…this is where teamwork comes in, for it is important to have a good mix of young and old, fit and unfit in your team because the hunt can stretch from one end of the harbour to the other.  The hunt is always at breakneck speed for those desperate to win, whereas others are happy to take part for the fun of it.

Tiny Tots Easter Egg Hunt (Easter Sunday)

This event is designed for the very little children - every child is guaranteed to win a chocolate egg or two!

Both events are free to enter and sponsored by various Cape and other businesses – donations are welcome to ensure this annual event continues for many more years to come.

May Weekend: 29th April / May 2012

Traditional Music; Bird Watching Walk; Whale Watching Trip; Guided Walks; Book Launch

Cape Clear Island Annual Walking Talking Weekend started a couple of years ago to coincide with the introduction of a looped walk on Cape it has now developed into an annual event.  It offers a range of gorgeous walks throughout the Island guided by individuals wise enough (or is it mad enough) to leave the rat race and live on a ‘remote’ island.

The knowledge we impart on these walks include snippets on the Island’s history, folklore and ecology but, remember,  it is a talking tour as well as a walking tour where all members (if they feel they want to) are encouraged to tell their own ‘story.’

The Island has a variety of terrains and stunning scenery and is also famous for bird watching and whale & dolphin watching. Recommended evening entertainment is informal with local musicians and singers.  Costs range from €5 per guided walk, to €15 for the Whale Watching trip, to €15 for a recommended evening meal.

See the Cape Clear Hostel page  for schedule of walks and events over the weekend.
